Controversial Virus

A controversial virus has been detected in cutthroat trout living in Cultus Lake. Piscine reovirus is thought by some experts to be a non-disease carrying virus, while others believe the virus can cause a high death rate in other species if cross-contamination were to occur. The virus may be connected to heart and skeletal muscle inflammation in salmon, inhibiting their ability to swim upstream and spawn.  The virus, found by pathologists in farm raised Atlantic salmon, has been dismissed by the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture pathologist Gary Marty. Simon Fraser University Professor Rick Routledge believes that the federal government needs to take the situation more seriously. The virus is thought to have no effects on humans.
