Virus found in Canadian Sockeye Salmon

Posted by Parker Bradley:

A virus known as infectious salmon anemia (ISA) has recently been detected in two wild British Columbia sockeye salmon, a virus responsible for killing thousands of Atlantic salmon in Chile in 1996.   The virus was discovered from routine testing done on Pacific salmon, but due to the recent discovery, testing efforts will dramatically increase.   States such as Alaska and Idaho are naturally concerned about the virus in their salmon stocks as salmon from both states may come in contact with Canadian salmon in the marine environment.   While the Canadian government is working to further confirm the virus, the U.S. government is calling for independent sampling. It is still unknown how this virus, known to kill Atlantic salmon, will affect Pacific salmon.   This could have huge implications in Pacific salmon management and will be an interesting story to follow as it develops.
