Extreme Management of an Educated Fishery

Posted by Paul Lutomski:  In Maine at Boothbay Harbour, with 200 boats and 600 traps per boat, one would think the lobsters in this area would be depleted quickly. But because of an educated and dedicated fishery, the lobster population here is actually growing. Females carrying eggs are identified by notching the tail allowing her to breed for at least 2 more years. Lobsters of all size are limited too small and they go back, too big and they also go back. Fishermen also seem to manage each other effectively without overwhelming the judicial system which is also important to the fishery.
