The Mediterranean Sea is now home to more non-native species of fish than native species

The Mediterranean Sea has been studied by the University of Haifa, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Center. They looked at the historic trawler records from 1990-1994 and the more resent records from 2008-2011, and found that a large change has happened over the past 20 years in what fish are present in the Mediterranean Sea. The invasive species rate was at 29% of the fish population 20 years ago, today the invasive species account for 55% of the fish population. The article explains how this change has a very negative effect on the native species of the area and what regulations might be beneficial to the native species if implemented.
