Alaska Board of Fisheries Meeting

News with Fins 04

On March 20-23, 2012 the Alaska Board of Fisheries will hold the Statewide Dungeness Crab, Shrimp, and Miscellaneous Shellfish Meeting in Anchorage. In 2010, the state fisheries board passed a Prince William Sound commercial shrimping plan that allows a commercial harvest when the surplus estimate exceeds 110,000 pounds.   Proposals 358-361 of this Alaska Board of Fisheries Meeting call for the closure of the commercial shrimp pot industry in Prince William Sound. Fewer PWS shrimp reportedly being harvested may lead to a necessary pot reduction for sport and recreational fishing as well.

  1. in more and more locales, sport and commercial fisheries are overlapping and causing confrontation, i wonder if it will always make sense to manage these fisheries seperately.

  2. I have a friend who operates a commercial shrimp boat in Prince William Sound and this closure will negatively impact him. However, he does understand that his loss may be in the best interest of sport shrimp fisheries. By closing this fishery the BOF may be able to prevent a total collapse of the shrimp population in PWS.
